DATING FOR THE CLUELESS After having left Stephanie at an Amerilodge the night before to help Dick finish dealing with Charaxes Tim meets her to finish hearing her out about her father's death and spend time with her. The two of them walk to a diner where Stephanie talks about her antagonistic relationship with her father until a television show on behind the bar infuriates her by glossing over what it means to be a rape victim and the two of them quickly pay and leave. They enter a music store where the clerk gives Stephanie permission to play on one of their pianos and after lamenting that her skill has waned she explains to Tim why she insisted on quitting her piano lessons when she was younger, and why the broadcast at the diner had made her so mad. While her piano instructor was "a sweet, patient little old Polish gnome" her father, who at the time was working a legitimate job in manufacturing, started bringing home a friend named Jim Murray who was anything but and who caused her not to be able to stand being alone with any adult men for a time. When Arthur went to somewhat forcibly check Crystal into rehab for her drug addiction he left Murray to watch over the year old Stephanie while they were gone. When Murray tried to force himself on her Steph fought back and fled to her elementary school. Her hunger drove her to return to the house and upon seeing that Murray's car was gone she snuck back in and spent the next three days hiding under her bed with kitchen knives and sneaking into the kitchen to quickly grab snacks. When her parents returned her father cut off her attempts to explain what had happened and forbade her from talking to her mother about it, saying that she had misunderstood the situation due to her age. This reaction in addition to her mistrust of police officers caused by being raised by a career criminal was what spurned her to try and be attentive and figure things out before they happened, setting her on the path to becoming a detective and costumed vigilante.
